Digby is a Wizard… Hilarious and Heart Wrenching

‘It’s quite normal to have hopes and dreams fill our heads with bubbly excitement from time to time. It’s also quite normal for those moments to inexplicably lead us down dark paths and exploding bathrooms’ Digby is a Wizard – Joe Latham

Having spotted the Kickstarter campaign, Digby is a Wizard is the first comic that we have managed to get our hands on from the awesomely talented Joe Latham, founder of Lookhappydesign.com. It so happens that it was one of the first projects we backed as Indieventure, making it quiet a momentous backing, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on our digital copy.

It certainly did not disappoint. Digby is a Wizard tells the story of a wizard with big dreams who experiences some rather odd and unfortunate events while on a quest to a job interview. The art style invites you straight in, the small 6 drawings per page make the comic an effortless read that you will almost certainly not put down until you finish it. The wording is simple, as the art is more than expressive enough. Having briefly sampled some of Joe’s other works, The Fox in particular, it is evident that Joe does not need words to portray a story, his art style expresses all that needs to be expressed in order to engage the readers emotion. Having said that, the wording in Digby is both hilarious and heart wrenching at times. The clever one liners progress the story at a perfect pace.

The story will leave you laughing, crying and asking questions of yourself, and for me at least, encouraged self reflection. It touches on the difficult subject of depression and the importance of understanding your support system, that your friends and family are there to support you, just as Digbys are there to support him.

Having read Digby is a Wizard I found that Joe has published 3 other comics, The Fox, The Wolf and The Woodsman as well as a graphic novel Loosing Sleep, a collaboration with the equally talented Bristol based creator Luke Hyde. All of which are available on his website Lookhappydesign.com. We will definitely be checking these out!

Please also check out lukehyde.co.uk for his awesome works, and to show your support for independent artists and comic makers.

Our Top 5 Comics and Graphic Novels on Kickstarter! (August/September)

Afternoon everyone! These are the 5 most promising graphic novels and comics currently available to back on kickstarter that we think are worth a punt!

Stormcaller

First on the list is Stormcaller, a 96 page graphic novel from Liverpool based artist Claire Thompson. It takes place in a small unidentifiable town whose citizens are subjected to a series of curious and terrifying events. It reveals how unsustainable the ties of common humanity and civilised society can be when things don’t quite go to plan’. Now I have to admit, this is the type of novel that grabs my attention every time, I love the suspense and intrigue that comes with premises that explore the human psyche. We have backed this project and cannot wait to get our hands on a copy.

Digby is a Wizard

Digby is a Wizard is a charming 44 page graphic novel from Bristol based artist Joe Latham. The panel style novel is for all ages and the storytelling ranges from sensitive to the downright silly as you follow the story of Digby and his seemingly hillariuous  journey to a job interview. The art style appears both playful and sincere and for just £4 for the digital copy, we can’t wait to read it.

Hamfam

Hamfam is a digital only 25 page comic from the talented Adam Hammour. The story sees Hamfam, a pig with eyes in his nose, on a quest to party in a dangerous and dark post apocalyptic world. Just like the artwork, the story appear crazy and full of strange and original characters. The artwork is bold and slightly surreal, complementing the story perfectly. Again, for only £5 for the digital edition, alought short, it will leave us excited for part 2!

Sci-fi is our jam, that’s why I’m most excited about number 4, The Last Arrival Part 1. Brought to you by the well established Free Fantasy Comics, The Last Arrival a team of 5 aliens, desperately fleeing their planet in search of a new home. The artwork perfectly lends itself to the genre and provides the perfect mix of awe and suspense.
